Roald Dahl Born in Cardiff, South Wales, England in 1916. He served as a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force in World War II and has also been shot down in North Africa. After writing about these experiences, he became a writer and published his first collection of short stories, "The Tales of the Aviators." In 1953, he published this book and won the American Detective Writer Club Award for Short Stories. He is known as a master of short stories, including "Kiss Kiss" and "The Visitor."
