This book is a catalogue raisonne created by collector Jacques Dworczak, a French gallerist and collector who has been researching the furniture they created for Chandigarh, a city in Punjab, northern India. When India was independence, the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, dreamed of a "new city that is a symbol of India's freedom and expresses the trust of its people in the future." Chandigarh, meaning "Chandi fort," Indian goddess of power, is an embodiment of Prime Minister Nehru's concept. The construction of this municipality, created by Le Corbusier, a renowned modernist architect, from the utopian dream of an avant-garde city, was a symbol of India's determination to advance towards modern society. Chandigarh was not a "vertical city" but was made up of horizontal grid-like cities, including wide boulevards, residential areas, green spaces, medical facilities, schools, temples, shops, playgrounds and artificial lakes. Le Corbusier designed most of the infrastructure and boldly used ready-made concrete to highlight the large volume. Le Corbusier has designed a building plan tailored to the region's climate, preventing sunlight and rainy season rain, and also spurring air circulation with breathable shutters and large terraces.
